St Paul's Cathedral Tour - Mirandus Tours

St Paul's Cathedral Tour

Sir Christopher Wren’s baroque masterpiece is the 5th cathedral to be built on this site. The previous version was badly damaged by the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the project to rebuild it became Wren’s lifelong passion.

In recent times it has hosted the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965 as well as the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. Energetic visitors can climb the steps of the majestic Dome, the 2nd largest in Christendom. The top level (528 steps) is the Golden Gallery, providing breathtaking panoramic views of London.

Highlights of the tour include:

  • The Dome – a marvel to behold, especially from just underneath. The murals, statues and mosaics are absolutely spectacular
  • West Front – magnificent colonnade and pediment featuring story of conversion of Saul on the road to Damascus
  • Tombs of Nelson and Wellington – final resting place for two of the country’s most celebrated military leaders

Wren is buried in a simple tomb in the crypt. A plaque on a nearby wall contains the Latin inscription “Lector, si monumentum requires, circumspice” or translated into English; “Reader, if you seek his memorial, look around you”
