Downton Abbey Tour - Mirandus Tours

Downton Abbey Tour

We explore the main filming locations for multi-award winning Downton Abbey. Our first stop is the picturesque Cotswolds village of Bampton, used extensively as a filming location including:

  • The church used for the wedding of Lady Mary & Matthew Crawley
  • The village green where the fairground and war memorial were situated
  • The house where the exterior shots of Isobel Crawley’s home were filmed

N.B. There is a small exhibition inside Bampton Library which sells an assortment of Downton Abbey memorabilia.

After Bampton, we take a leisurely drive through the countryside to Highclere Castle, the real life home to Lord and Lady Canarvon. Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey, is a long time family friend of the Canarvon family.

We explore Highclere Castle including:

  • The library where Lord Grantham attends to his correspondence in the morning
  • The morning room where Maggie Smith (Dowager Countess) and Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley) relax in between takes
  • Lady Cora’s bedroom where she is often being attended to by her Lady’s Maid

N.B. Highclere Castle tickets do need to be booked in advance and are only available at certain times of the year so please do check with us first.

If Highclere Castle is closed, Bampton can easily be combined with other destinations e.g. Oxford and the Cotswolds.
